Energy Charter holds specialised Information Training in Tehran
The Energy Charter Secretariat Knowledge Centre held a highly specialised training information session at the Ministry of Energy of Iran on 1 June 2016. The theme of the event, which took place in highly interactive roundtable format, was 'Driving energy investments and cooperation in a changing world: benefits and opportunities for deeper engagement with the Energy Charter'.
This event was organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Energy in Iran and was attended by key stakeholders from various other Ministries and authorities in Tehran, including the Presidential office, the National Organisation for Environmental Protection and the Justice Department. This roundtable workshop was delivered by the Energy Charter Secretary General, Dr Urban Rusnák, Dr Marat Terterov from the Knowledge Centre and Mr Can Öğütçü from the Expansion and Outreach department.
Participants quizzed the Energy Charter delegation with numerous questions regarding Iran's possible future accession to the Energy Charted Treaty (ECT) and the legal and commercial implications this would entail. The Energy Charter delegation also provided insight on the relations between the ECT and the World Trade Organization (WTO), investment promotion and protection, as well as energy efficiency under the ECT. Most of the Iranian participants already had substantial knowledge of the ECT and a lively discussion on the compatibility of the Treaty with Iranian legislation ensued. The session heralded a milestone in the development of relations between the Energy Charter and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Iranian Government presented a copy of the ECT translated into Persian to the Energy Charter delegation and welcomed further cooperation in the long term in order to deepen Iran's already active role in the Energy Charter Process.
